About the anthem
Cape Verde's national anthem, "Cântico da Liberdade" ("Song of Freedom"), adopted in 1996, replaced a shared anthem with Guinea-Bissau, reflecting a political split after their joint independence struggle. Lyrics by Amílcar Spencer Lopes and music by Adalberto Higino Tavares Silva, it signifies unique national identity after the failed union with Guinea-Bissau, moving away from the earlier "Esta É a Nossa Pátria Amada" (which remains Guinea-Bissau's anthem).
